International Women's Day 2024

With well over a century of history and change, the first International Women's Day (IWD) was held in March 1911. IWD isn't country, group or organization specific. It's a day of collective global activism and celebration that belongs to all those committed to forging women's equality.

As the world-renowned feminist, journalist and activist, Gloria Steinem, said: "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights."

The campaign theme for International Women's Day 2024 is Inspire Inclusion.

When we inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion, we forge a better world. And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there's a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment. Collectively, let's forge a more inclusive world for women.

Here is SGUW's own AbdulAziz Sesay marching in Bo, where SGUW has participated in IWD celebrations since our founding. This year, as previously, we visited the women's prison to distribute necessities to incarcerated mothers and their young children.

And, some thoughts from the desk of SGUW 'sometimes' blog writer, Chernor Barrie-

On this International Women's Day, we celebrate the remarkable achievements and resilience of women around the world, embodying the spirit of "Inspire Inclusion." May we honor the diversity, strength, and contributions of women from all walks of life, and advocate for a more inclusive society where every woman is empowered, supported, and valued. Together, let us inspire inclusion, break barriers, and create a world where equality and opportunity know no bounds. Happy International Women's Day to all the Strong and phenomenal women. At Strong Girls United Women we recognize the difference you're making today and every day! #menasallies

If you happen to see someone making the heart symbol - its the international sign of inclusion and support- give it right back to them.

There are many ways to ensure the needs, interests and aspirations of women and girls are valued and included. SGUW and organizations around the globe, #InspireInclusion through action in areas such as:

  • designing and building infrastructure meeting the needs of women and girls

  • helping women and girls make informed decisions about their health

  • involving women and girls in sustainable agriculture and food security

  • providing women and girls with access to quality education and training

  • elevating women and girl's participation and achievement in sport

  • promoting creative and artistic talent of women and girls

  • addressing further areas supporting the advancement of women and girls

Please consider donating to further the work of SGUW in Sierra Leone.

Just because the road ahead is long, is no reason to slow down. Just because there is much work to be done, is no reason to get discouraged. Get on the road. Stay on the road. Get on with the work.
